figuring out what this season will look like

With August being almost here I wanted to give a shout out to how things could play out through next month.

Before Covid threw the public high school admissions into disarray, the process worked with remarkably clocklike regularity from season to season so families knew basically how things would work before they got to 8th grade. While it’s been chaotic the last few years, things seem to be starting to settle back into a more structured routine.

The past two season returned to the pre-Covid timeline: touring took place in September through November (some in December). The SHSAT was end of October/beginning of November. Applications were due the beginning of December and offers were released beginning of March.

Last year many schools returned to in person touring. Some schools offered both in person and online options and some stuck with online only. Before Covid some schools announced their viewing options in August, before school was back in session, with tours scheduled first and second week of school. I’m already looking out for announcements that could pop up at any time. Keep in mind that nothing about touring is organized centrally. Every school makes its own decisions about how to open up their school, how to share information, how viewing will operate.
